How To Layer Your Skincare Products

How To Layer Your Skincare Products

PRODUCTS & WORKOUTS USED

Serums, oils, boosters, creams… It can be hard to understand what each skincare product does, let alone the order in which you should apply them. We’re here to break it down for you and help you navigate the basics when it comes to skincare layering.

Why Is Layering Skin Care Important?

The skincare products you need are often as individual as your own skin. From cleansers and moisturisers to actives for dull or acne-prone skin, the best skincare routine is likely to combine a number of products. But why is it important to get the order right when you are layering different products together?

Using too many products, combining products that don't work well together, or applying them in the wrong order could mean your products aren’t working as effectively as they could be which also means your skin isn’t getting the full benefit. Plus, if you have sensitive skin you may find your skincare routine is causing irritation or inflammation.

How To Layer Skincare Products

After cleansing your face with a gentle cleanser, try and keep this advice in mind: always apply the product with the thinnest formula first (think hyaluronic acid serums) and then move up through your routine ending with the thicker ones, like day or night moisturisers. This allows the thinner products to penetrate the top layer of the skin more successfully. If all things have the same consistency? Go for the most concentrated one that tackles the most important of your skin concerns.

Morning Skin Care Routine

Firstly, use a gentle foaming cleanser to remove any sebum (particularly if you have oily skin), dead skin cells, and product residue from your nighttime routine. Why not try our Electro-Lite Gel Cleanser.

Head for your water-based serums (this will be your Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid, Niacinamide, etc). Our Hydro-Bound Hyaluronic + Niacinamide Serum is the perfect addition to your routine to improve your skin barrier. Our top tip - apply when the skin is still a little damp from the cleanse to really lock-in extra hydration. Follow this with a daily moisturiser, like our  Liftwear Gel-Cream Moisturiser or if you prefer a richer formula, try Supreme Restructure EGF Collagen Boosting Moisturiser

Finish with your favourite broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect skin during the day.

Evening Skin Care Routine

Remove your makeup and SPF and complete a deep end-of-day cleanse, Electro-Lite is perfect for the evening routine too as the addition of hydrating electrolytes and calcium help to replenish and rehydrate the skin at the end of the day. Next, grab your acid toner like our Skin Changer 2-in-1 Essence-Toner, this step provides an additional exfoliation and clean to really target congestion, blemishes and dullness. Ideally, wait for approx. 10 minutes if possible, to allow it to work before continuing with the rest of your routine. Next, apply any water based serums, we love our Youth Reformer Oil-In-Serum in the evening, as the added Palo Santo helps to soothe tired skin and weary minds ready for bed. Seal it all with a night cream like Supreme Restructure. If you want to add in a weekly treatment, try Cheat Mask Resurfacing & Brightening Overnight Treatment, apply after cleansing and lock-in with Supreme Restructure to treat and transform the skin whilst you sleep.

5 Tips For Layering Skincare Products

If you're new to layering multiple skin care products or haven't seen the results you wanted from your current combination of products, following these 5 tips will help keep your layered skincare routine on point.

  1. Light before heavy

You want to start with your lightest products first, so watery serums should go on first, working up to heavier creams and moisturisers.

  1. Water before oil

Oil-based products can be hard to penetrate, so you would want to apply your water-based product first, with oil-based products on top.

  1. Pay attention to pH

Make sure you know the pH values of the active ingredients you are using, and layer these so the more acidic, low pH products go on before the higher pH, more neutral products.

  1. Mix carefully

Getting all the benefits from different products may be appealing, but some ingredients may not play well with others, particularly if you are using more potent products. So always pay attention to what you are combining, and get advice if necessary.

  1. Sunscreen

SPF is an essential, everyday - come rain or shine! So when you've finished layering all your other products, the final layer should always be a good sunscreen.
