What Causes Oily Skin?
Under each pore is a gland that produces a natural oil called sebum. Before the alarm bells start screaming at the sound of ‘sebum’, it’s important to remember that sebum itself is vital in keeping our skin healthy. It reduces water loss from the skin's surface to encourage healthier, smoother, younger-looking skin. Where sebum becomes a challenge, is when it goes into overdrive.
Excess sebum is most often caused by hormones, genetics, age and environmental stressors. Each one of these, or a combination of, can tell the sebaceous gland to produce more oil than what your skin actually needs. This causes a build-up of oil, enlarged pores and clogging of pores with dirt, dead skin cells and oil, particularly around the forehead, cheeks, and chin.
So, while sebum is a very good thing for our skin, learning how to stop an oily face throughout the day can be a total game-changer for those of us who are a little more oily than we’d like.
Here are a few oily skin treatments that work:
- The Clean Routine
You’ve probably heard a million times that the key to great skin is having a consistent cleansing routine. It’s especially important most when it comes to reducing excess oil. Try a gentle foaming face wash and be kind to your face - avoid scrubbing and harsh chemicals. Stick to a morning and evening cleansing routine. Avoid over-cleansing as it can trigger sebaceous glands to go into overdrive, thinking they need to make up for moisture loss.
Don’t be afraid to moisturise. There are a plethora of great mattifying creams, gels and balms out there that can help control oil, while adding the hydration your skin needs. Hydration is key to regulating the production of sebum, and lightweight water-based products can add the luminosity you love, while keeping excess oil at bay. A great oily skin moisturiser we love is Pestle & Mortar’s Hydrate Moisturiser for it’s lightweight moisture boost that firms as it hydrates, and Pestle & Mortar's Pure Hyaluronic Serum is a winner for oily skin with its fast absorbing, skin-balancing formula.
- Mask Up
Not only are masks the perfect excuse for a little self-care, layering on a detoxifying face mask gives your skin a boost to glow without the shine. A great face mask for oily skin is the Allies Of Skin Promise Keeper Blemish Facial. This nightly leave-on treatment comes to the rescue for oily and breakout-prone skin. It reduces oil production to stop blemishes in their tracks, and helps prevent future blemishes from forming in the first place.
