Serums, oils, mists, essences, creams…It can be hard enough to understand what each skincare product does, let alone the order of skincare products to effectively apply each one!
When you want to achieve glowing, healthy skin, navigating the basics of layering your products can be really confusing.
Why is layering skin care important?
The skincare products you need can be as individual as your own skin. From cleansers to moisturizers and actives for dull or acne-prone skin, the best skincare routine is likely to combine a number of products. But why is it important to get the order right when you are layering different products together?
Using too many products all at once, combining products that don't go well together, or applying them in the wrong order may mean that they are not properly absorbed and your skin doesn't get the full benefit of them, or worse, if you have sensitive skin you may find your skincare routine causes your skin to become irritated, red and blotchy.
How to Layer Skincare Products
To make sure your layered products are as effective as possible and to avoid the risk of irritation for sensitive skin types, here are some suggested approaches to layering skincare products and some useful tips to bear in mind when creating a good skincare routine.
After cleansing your face with a gentle cleanser, try and keep this advice in mind: always apply the thinnest product first and then move to your richer, more occlusive ones. This allows the thinner products such as essences and serums etc. to penetrate the top layer of the skin more successfully. If all things have the same consistency? Go for the most concentrated one that tackles the most important of your skin concerns. Right, you do not have to add in all of the following steps to your current skincare routine, but if you did, this is how we would suggest layering them…
Morning Skin Care Routine
Firstly, use a very mild facial cleanser such as a gentle foaming cleanser to remove any sebum (particularly if you have oily skin), dead skin cells, and product residue from your nighttime routine. Why not try FaceGym's Electro-Lite Gel Cleanser. Follow this with a mist/essence – any product that has a more water-like consistency!
Head for your eye cream and water-based serums (this will be your Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid, Niacinamide, etc). FaceGym's Hydro-Bound Hyaluronic + Niacinamide Serum is the perfect addition to your routine to improve your skin barrier. Apply this under an oily serum or daily moisturizer, like FaceGym's Liftwear Gel-Cream Moisturiser or Supreme Restructure EGF Collagen Boosting Moisturiser.
Finish with your favorite broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect skin during the day.
Evening Skin Care Routine
Remove your makeup and SPF with an oil-based cleanser, using a flannel for a gentle exfoliation and efficient removal of any leftover residue. Follow with a mild cleanser to make sure you’ve really gotten rid of everything (Electro-Lite here again!). Next grab your acid toner. Ideally, wait for approx. 10 minutes if possible, to allow it to work before continuing with the rest of your routine. The next layer would be mist and then an essence, followed by eye cream and water-based serums. Next would be oil-based serums like a retinol serum for example, like FaceGym's Youth Reformer Oil-In-Serum. Seal it all with an overnight mask or a night cream!
5 Tips for Layering Skincare Products
If you're new to layering multiple skincare products or haven't seen the results you wanted from your current combination of products, following these 5 tips will help keep your layered skincare routine on point.
1. Light before heavy
You want to start with your lightest products first, so watery serums should go on first, working up to heavier creams and moisturizers.
2. Water before oil
Oil-based products can be hard to penetrate, so you would want to apply your water-based product first, with oil-based products on top.
3. Pay attention to pH
Make sure you know the pH values of the active ingredients you are using, and layer these so the more acidic, low pH products go on before the higher pH, more neutral products.
4. Mix carefully
Getting all the benefits from different products may be appealing, but some ingredients may not play well with others, particularly if you are using more potent products. So always pay attention to what you are combining, and get advice if necessary.
We've said it before and will say it again, with the damage the sun can do to your skin sunscreen should be part of everyone's skincare routine. So when you've finished layering all your other products, the final layer should always be a good sunscreen.
